Ahmedabad : Low wind became the reason on the day of Uttarayan that Ahmedabadi people have to make lots of efforts to fly their kites. Ahmedabadis were geared up for the sky fighting for the day to Uttarayan on 14th January but since morning the wind speed was not so supportive to kite flyers. On day before Uttarayan, the kite markets were full of colorful kites and bunch of kite enthusiasts who were making final purchase of Kites and Manjha. Ahmedabadi people made the most of saturday to ensure that they enjoy their Uttarayan on Sunday with full celebration. Makarsankranti is celebrated to commemorate the transition of Sun to its northward journey and the celebration with kite flying is around two centuries old. Due to favorable wind condition, people can fly kites on these days. In many parts of the country, Uttarayan is being celebrated with different rituals but in Gujarat, people of Ahmedabad, Surat, Vadodara and many other parts enjoy kite fighting in the sky. Compared to the next year, this time there is almost 15 to 20% rise in the prices of the Kites and Manjhas. But due to non availability of the wind, kite flyers couldn’t enjoy much. Because of low wind speed, they had to give more efforts to fly kites. But at the same time, they also enjoyed particular food items like, Undhiyu, Jalebi, Chikki and Til Laddus. This time lots of various theme kites were seen like, Kite with Narendra Modi Photo, Chandrayan Kites and other characters etc…
People who are residing in the wall city of the Ahmedabad, enjoyed in their own way. This time it was difficult to take a terrace on rent as the rent prices were sky rocketing in the wall city that one can not afford the same just for two days. Kite sellers got brisk business of Sunglasses, caps, masks, tapes etc…
